Once again, there are several people leaving LJ. This makes me sad, of course. LJ has been my internet home for over a decade. I have tried other formats/sites, but really don't care for them. I also have permanent accounts (with extras) here and am comfortable with the formatting. Like some others, I intend to stay until they kick me out. LOL

LJ is my internet home and if I want to continue to play here, I have to play nice with the new landlords. We don't need to agree with Russian laws or views to stay. LJ is just a blogging site. The servers have been moved to Russia. There are worse places they could be. I'm all for leaving the politics out of it, and using it for non-political things.

I don't think there is any evil intent here, just the new Russian owners complying with Russian laws (which they have to do), since Russia is where the servers now sit.

There has been a lot said about the new ToS. LJ was sold a long time ago. And yes, I think we can all agree that the sudden pop-up of click now and agree, or be gone, was not the kindest, gentlest, nicest way to introduce the new ToS, and it has spurred fear and anger. However, from what I've seen, it isn't all that different than other ToS online. Yes, I suppose our use of LJ is now under Russian law, but who do you really think Russians are more concerned with: Russians or non-Russians?

You have to agree to the ToS for pretty much any online site that you use. They're all pretty similar. Most people don't know because, seriously, who actually reads through them all? It's just legalize to cover their asses. They've re-written it, sure. It's been translated, of course. I don't see anything all that outlandish.

If you're into fanfic though, I would advise setting your journal to "adult only" just to cover your own ass, and label posts "adult only" if you post to a community that is not set to "adult only" (I believe it will say on the profile page). After all, we just need to make sure the little kidlings aren't getting into adult material. Whether you post fic here, link it, or only discuss it, I would still use the "adult only" setting (you can set each post to "adult only").

To remain or leave is a personal decision. I support and respect everyone's rights to make their own decision, and do what they feel is best for themselves. Of course, I would love to see people stay, or at least keep their LJ active to participate in challenges. But I understand if people feel it's their time to go.

Anyway, there are others who have a better handle on this and say things far more eloquently than I do. I do encourage everyone to give a read through. I also encourage those leaving to read through the ToS to their new internet homes. You're going to find a lot of the same stuff, just worded a little differently. Personally, I don't think the new LJ ToS is a reason to leave, and yes I completely understand that some people are leaving for different reasons, but the new ToS was the last straw for them.

[livejournal.com profile] fiorenza_a did a brilliant job of going through the new ToS and simplifying the legalize.
I encourage everyone to give these posts a read through.

Part Two

And [livejournal.com profile] naemi has also gone through it and does a great job discussing it HERE

A word on the challenges:
I do intend to continue to run the challenges here at LJ. However, I do have a few mirror communities set up at DW. As of yet, I've done nothing with any of them. The main challenges I run are the NCIS Big Bang, NCIS Reverse Bang and the NCIS SeSa (secret Santa). Last year I ran a Happy Holidays Advent challenge, so that may be back. The SeSa is primarily run through AO3. That's where you sign up, and where stories are posted. The LJ comm is where I post schedules, notices and master lists. For the others, I will likely continue to run the claims at LJ. Having permanent accounts here gives me plenty of space to host artwork. However, if anyone is leaving LJ and still wants to participate in the challenges, feel free to join the mirror comms at DW. One of these days I may even post something over there. *G*

And lastly, I do have a DW from years ago, but I don't use it. It's primarily an archive for my fan fic. I'm simply Jacie over there. However, I've posted my email here and there, so many of you probably have it (if you don't, and you want it, please PM me). Feel free to keep in touch via email.

Feel free to post below if you're staying or going (or both? I know some post at both LJ and DW). It's nice to know rather than wonder months later why someone hasn't posted or commented for a while. Feel free to email me if you're leaving, but want to stay in touch.

I am not planning to leave. Mostly because I don't really like any of the other sites. The site that was ok I don't think is around anymore. Or at least I'm not easily finding it. lol.

Ditto, I haven't found anything I like nearly as well. The ToS doesn't seem all that different than any other site's ToS. I know some people object to the site now being governed by Russian laws...but I think they're more concerned with their own citizens, that non-citizens.

Honestly. I've given up on reading ToS. Most of them are basically "be nice to people", "don't use crude language", etc. Kind of common sense type stuff. The rest is all legalese that basically says anything you post on our site we have the right to do anything we want with. At least in my experience.

I mean to me ToS is basically a way for the site to cover their ass when they're kicking you out or when you get sued over something you did on their site, so that they don't get sued as well. Plus, it's not like you can use the site without agreeing to the ToS, so it's pretty much a if I want to use the site I click the agree button. If not, then I won't see the ToS and it won't matter anyway. -.-

I'm a bit jaded when it comes to this. I'm a firm believer that privacy no longer exists and is just an illusion we allow ourselves.

Yep, they're all basically the same. Really though, their access to what you post is really along the lines of hosting it. They have the right to alter it as needed to host it and make it viewable to others (as per your privacy settings and filters). For instance, you and I have different journal themes. The site has to be able to adjust the post so we can each read it on our chosen themes. I don't think they way it's worded in ToS is to mean they will steal your posts or do anything with them, or for them to go against your privacy settings (i.e. suddenly make all your private or filtered posts public - if that does happen, I would blame hackers or glitches).

I totally agree. The ToS is just to legally cover their asses in today's world...and you can't use their services without it. I truly enjoy LJ. I think it's a wonderful service they provide, especially that they offer it for free.

I agree. Anything you put online, someone else out there CAN view it. I ran a web site once and I could see everyone's passwords. I really had to in case people lost theirs...but until then, I had no idea that passwords weren't encrypted from Admins. Of course with ALL the content out there, I can't see that anyone would have all the time and energy to wade through it all.

Well the intent behind the ToS is to make sure that anything they do to your stuff they can't get sued over. lol. Most companies aren't trying to be shady, but some of the ToS is rather shady because they're trying to cover their asses.

I can't say I truly enjoy lj, but it definitely has it's benefits. I spend a lot more time at ao3 than on lj, so *shrugs*. I've also never been much of a journaler. lol.

It is nice that it is free. If I had to pay for it, I probably wouldn't. Not unless I could do the pay once and it's permanent thing.

I work as a software engineer, so I've done multiple things with passwords. All the places I've worked the passwords are encrypted in the database, so you can't see it easily, but anyone who works there would be able to unencrypt them if they needed to since they know the encryption algorithm used. So even though we don't know what the password is and can't tell what it is, it's not true that we can't find out. But then the same is true of basically any hacker. There are a lot of people in the world smarter than me and I'm sure that some of them can manage to figure out my passwords if they put their mind to it.

The only sense of security I have is that I'm not well known enough for anyone to bother. I'm far more likely to get my information hacked because they went after a big company that had my info than someone actually targeting me. *shrugs*

I keep saying this after every scare, but I'm not going anywhere. I do like DW, but LJ is my home, and I'll be here until I'm kicked out.

Many thanks for letting me know! Since I have permanent journals here, I will be here as long as they will have me. A friend and I both looked for a place to host photos at DW. Maybe it's only for paid accounts? I have tons of space here, so it will always be easier for me to host challenges here.

This past weekend, I finally did set up a personal journal over there. It is "jacieleigh". I might start cross posting, just because it takes forever to import stuff. I must admit DW has greatly improved since 2011! I don't think I would mind being over there. Except it looks like less activity than LJ...and I can't afford paid accounts there.

Since NCIS is the fandom I'm active in, I checked out the NCIS comms at DW. It was disappointing to see that many (most?) hadn't been updated in YEARS. Some not since 2008-2009...before I was even in that fandom.
