About a month ago, I got an invite to Imzy. I knew it was still in beta mode, but didn't know exactly how long it had been going. Now I know! They consider Sept 15 their start date, so Imzy is now a year old and growing by leaps and bounds. Although my comms over there seem to have even less activity than the LJ counterparts at this point. I'm still hopeful for more activity.

I still have a plenty of invites if anyone is interested. I will need your email address if you want an invite. Or you can go sign up through one of my communities.

There are some very active communities over there. It seems like the more general communities go over better than the specific communities. They have been reporting a huge growth in members and communities so it's kind of neat to be in at this early stage.

What I really can't stand is that I can't browse this site. I can't even look at your comms without Imzy requesting me to sign up.

What I can see behind the "become a member NOW!" pop-up thingy is a blurred something that, to me, has a terrible feel of tumblr, of which I'm so not a fan either.

Imzy may be cool and all, but by being so non-transparent and as such coming across as a super-secret-speshul club of sorts, they definitely didn't make a friend of me, and I can imagine other people having the same reaction. A year its still young, so it could grow (or not), but maybe it's also sort of "slow business" because of that.

It's not like that's your fault or that you could change any of it, obvs, lol. But I'd meant to express that before because, well, I just felt like it :o)

ETA: I realize it's in beta and all, but really, if you want people to be crazy about your product, you've gotta give them something, even (maybe especially) when in beta. *sigh*

I admit that I haven't given it more than a glance yet, however, why don't they have it in a "you can view this but can't post unless you join" mode? At least Yahoo groups give the owner the choice. People need to explore a bit before committing to joining a group or community I think.

I will admit that I did go in on the invite and created a profile before I even tried to look at anything. I figured that if I didn't like it, I could delete it or abandon it.

I believe they have said once a name is taken, it's gone forever and they do not expect to release names that are abandoned. I wanted to grab my name before someone else did!

You do have the option to create multiple profiles, but you have to post somewhere in order to create a second name. For instance, if you wanted to keep your RL and fandom separate, you can do that and supposedly there's no way anyone can connect the two unless you tell them.

Actually, even if you join a community, the leader won't see your name until your post. When you make your first post to a community, you have to decide if you want to use your main profile or a create a different one for that specific community. You can only post under one profile for each community. And at this point, you cannot change that. Whatever name you use the first time you post is the one you must use for that community.

As with anything, it's not for everybody. I just liked that it was community based and I was hoping to reach some NCIS fandom people who are not on LJ. I like LJ for communities, but it's pretty slow these days, and has been for a while. I HATE DW. I can't get it to do a dang thing. I do like AO3 for posting stories, but there's no real community over there and no way to really get to know each other.

I'd be careful with running several aliases through one account if you want them unconnected. They're connected by default; that users can't see that doesn't mean its a secure thing or something.

I think the days when fandom truly wanted to make friends are over. It seems most things are only about creating traffic these days. I'd blame that on tumblr, but I assume it's really just a trend. Which is why the old guard mostly sticks around LJ, lol.

I'm just really always wary of places where I can't do dick without signing up—I'm not giving away any information lightheartedly. Not when it comes to companies anyway, lol.

In any case, I didn't mean to make you defend yourself.

I may have been more hesitant if it wasn't someone coming from a known site, and the article I read. I did read the article before signing up! LOL

I hope it starts getting busier. I think most, if not all, of those who have joined my comms are from LJ. Which makes sense as they probably all got their invites from me. But I hope to get some new people. Right now those comms aren't even getting as much traffic as the LJ ones!

Most of my posts there are identical or linked back to LJ posts. I was hoping to lure people back to LJ. And I also thought if that was easier for some people, maybe they would prefer to post over there. We'll see.

I think it's another link in the chain. The fewer sites there are, the closer together fandom will be. The more sites there are, the more spread out fandom is.

And I still want to make friends online, LOL. IF I do get a work at home job, I need to have someone to talk to! *G*

I jumped in and just created a profile before browsing. I honestly don't recall trying to view anything before that. I did google to see what it was, what I found is the link above. Once you have a profile, you can view stuff without posting or joining. There is also a way to leave a community if you decide it's not for you. It's buried now because people kept clicking the *leave* button just wanting to go back to their feed, but they were actually leaving the community permanently. LOL
